What is FSC Certification and why does it matter?

Certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an assurance mark for wood or wood-based products, guaranteeing its manufacture with wood sourced from FSC certified forests or from post-consumer waste; with a wealth of environmental, social and economic benefits.

SO, WHO IS THE FSC?

Created by a group of businesses, environmentalists and community leaders, the Forest Stewardship Council was formed in 1992, creating a voluntary, non-profit, market-based approach to improving forestry practices worldwide.

Their members include a host of world-leading environmental non-governmental organisations, businesses and social organisations and a plethora of forest owners and managers, processing companies and campaigners, and individuals.

The overriding vision of the FSC is to ensure the world’s forests meet the social, ecological and economic rights and needs of today’s generation, whilst maintaining the very same rights for future generations.
FSC certified: the highest social and environmental standards

The certification is an endorsement of manufacturers and landowners alike, verifying that their forestry practice is consistent with FSC standards.
With growing public concern for the condition of the world’s forests and the consumption of timber resources, the FSC label is an effective means of securing public and consumer recognition for responsible practices.

There are three types of FSC label:

  • 100% - Products which contain nothing but fibre from FSC certified forests
  • FSC Mix - The timber or fibre found in the product is a blend of some or all of the following:
    - Timber or fibre from an FSC-certified forest
    - Reclaimed timber or fibre
  • - Timber or fibre from other controlled sources
  • FSC Recycled - The timber or fibre sourced for the product is reclaimed material from both pre and post-consumer recycled material.
OUR COMMITMENT TO THE WIDER ENVIRONMENT

At Livingwood we don’t only focus on providing our clients with the very best energy efficient products for their project, we make sure they are ethically sourced too. We have a number of policies in place to ensure our offices and suppliers adhere to the best possible environmental practices.

All the timber we source is from a well-managed forest with genuine FSC certification and the manufacturers we deal with are also FSC certified. While we strive for impeccable customer service and stunning, energy-efficient doors and glazing, we’re equally willing to take responsibility for the environment.

How can we be sure our products genuinely come from an FSC well-managed forest?

The FSC system features a certified chain of custody, tracking the timber through every facet of the supply chain; from the forest to the end user. It’s monitored through the invoicing process and the final label on each product has a code confirming that the item is genuinely FSC certified.

This entire process is designed to give our clients complete trust in the FSC label. Since it has been demonstrated that around a fifth of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by carbon pollution from deforestation, FSC certified products allow our customers to do their bit to help the environment and purchase from sustainable sources.
