The Windmill near Lavenham – Scandinavian flush casement timber door & window installation

It’s not often you get the chance to transform as unique a space as a disused windmill, but that’s just what Livingwood are proud to have been a part of.

Steve and Natalie Roberts bought an old windmill after relocating from London in 2008. Originally built in 1891, The Windmill in Lavenham Road, Cockfield, was only operational until 1900.

Award winning transformation

Livingwood were asked to supply traditional but contemporary, energy efficient windows and doors to the main tower. We supplied triple glazed timber windows and doors from our Scandinavian Flush Casement Timber range of windows and doors, which achieved an average u value across the units of 1.1W/m²K. And the effect is stunning.

The Roberts’ have converted the windmill into luxury holiday accommodation, and it has since won two architectural awards; the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) East of England Tourism and Leisure Award, and a commendation at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Suffolk Design Awards.

In the two years spent renovating The Windmill, Steve and Natalie have sympathetically combined historic and the modern elements. In addition to its two awards, the project was a winner at last year’s National Roofing Awards and a finalist in both the Structural Timber Awards 2016 and the British Woodworking Federation Awards 2016.

A versatile range

By incorporating Livingwood’s Flush Casement windows, the Roberts’ have taken advantage of an extremely versatile range. We can produce frames in various shapes, incorporating glazing bars in either stick on or structural forms.

A full range of non-standard shapes and sizes are available, which is perfect for a project like The Windmill when the structure is unusual.

We also offer a range of RAL colours and the option of different internal and external colours on the same window. Special colours are available upon request and a range of stains are also available. These windows can be customised to suit each project and client’s individual needs.

Creating a luxury destination

Converting The Windmill was an exciting project, and Livingwood were proud to be involved, supplying our expertise and high-quality products to ensure the success of the restoration. At the start, the building had no original features and had been empty and unused for almost an entire century.

Steve said: “We knew to be able to restore The Windmill it would need to be a commercial project and that’s when we decided that luxury high-end holiday accommodation would be a fantastic way to bring the building back to life again.

“The build has not been without its difficulties, as the property is round everything had to be tailor- made. The sofas, beds, mattresses and headboards have been handmade, partly to fit the curve of The Windmill but we also wanted a luxurious and indulgent feel so that guests know they are staying somewhere exceptional and extraordinary!”
The Windmill stands against a picturesque Suffolk skyline and, in the short time since opening, has proved a huge success, offering a both a unique and luxurious alternative to classic holiday accommodation.
